08/25/2010 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Newly-acquired Rod Barajas hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-3 win over Milwaukee in the opener of a three-game set.
Matt Kemp hit a two-run home run, a 447-foot shot in the second inning off Dave Bush. Barajas, who was acquired from the New York Mets on a waiver claim Sunday, finished the game 3-for-4 for the Dodgers, who have won two of their last three games.
Ted Lilly (8-8) won his fifth consecutive start as he gave up three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 frames.
"That was a good one for us," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre. "Our catcher the other day had three hits, too. I guess our managers dumb for batting them eighth. The two doubles were a bonus, but the home run was a game-changer. When you get traded sometimes, you're so excited to get to your net team."
Rickie Weeks hit a solo home run while Casey McGehee went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Brewers, who have dropped their past two games. Bush (6-11) was handed the loss as he was charged with five runs on 10 hits over six innings.
"Bush would like to have a couple of pitches back," said Milwaukee manager Ken Macha. "A couple of two-strike breaking balls got too much over the plate and accounted for all their runs. Besides that he pitched good."
The Dodgers went ahead in the second as James Loney led off with a single and Kemp followed with a blast over the center field wall.
The Brewers got a run back in the bottom of the second as Prince Fielder led off with a single and McGehee brought him home with a triple to make it a 2-1 game. McGehee was stranded at third as the next three batters recorded outs.
Milwaukee then went ahead in the fifth. With two outs, Weeks homered to right to tie the game. Alcides Escobar then singled and Ryan Braun's double to left scored Escobar for a 3-2 lead.
Los Angeles, though, surged ahead in the sixth. With two outs, Ronnie Belliard kept the inning alive with a single and Jamey Carroll followed with a single. Barajas then launched a pitch over the left field wall for a 5-3 lead.
Lilly worked around a leadoff double by McGehee in the sixth and got the first out of the seventh before handing the ball to Ronald Belisario, who set down the next two batters.
With one out in the eighth, Fielder doubled, but McGehee lined out to third and Fielder was caught off the bag for the double play to end the frame.
Hong-Chih Kuo came on to close the game and got the first out, but Carlos Gomez laid down a bunt single. Jonathan Lucroy then hit one back to the mound and Kuo's throw to second base went into the outfield, leaving everyone safe. Kuo, though, then got pinch-hitter Corey Hart to pop out and Weeks to strike out and pick up his fifth save of the season.
Game Notes
Former Milwaukee owner and current baseball commissioner Bud Selig was honored with a bronze, 7-foot statue in front of Miller Park on Tuesday...Each team has won twice in the season series...Gomez was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game as he was suffering from a concussion...Lilly has won all five of his starts with Los Angeles since coming to the team from the Cubs.

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)
But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)
Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.
The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.
Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.
Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.
